Soka Funeral Services
Soka Funeral Services, like most Buddhist funeral services, serves 2 main purposes:
- To aid the deceased achieve enlightenment
- To console the bereaved family, offer support and help them overcome their grief
Like all Buddhist, Soka Gakkai members, believe in reincarnation, enlightenment and nirvana. However, unlike traditional Japanese Buddhist, Soka members do not believe that it is through formalized and elaborate priest presided funerals that one attains enlightenment. They instead believe that enlightenment is derived from the power of Buddha and one’s own faith, centered around the Gohonzon.
In short, they do not see the need for a Buddhist priest’s intercession, believing instead that it’s the sincere chanting of Sutra and Daimoku by family and fellow Soka members that bring about the most benefits for deceased members.
Hence, Soka funeral ceremonies are thus usually much simpler and the settings more modern and serene when compared to the funeral rites of other established Japanese Buddhist sects.
Overview of Soka Funeral Services (yujin-so)
Given the above, Soka funeral services are conducted by authorized Soka lay leaders instead of Buddhost priest. Because these lay leaders perform the service as friends, these services have become known as yujin-so or friend led funeral rites.
To prepare for a funeral service, these lay leaders will make an effort to learn about the deceased, his lifestyle and personality. This knowledge is then used by the leader to address those in attendance at the funeral, highlighting the deceased’s dedication to the teachings of the 13th Century Buddhist monk, Nichiren.
During the funeral service, these leaders, supported by other volunteer members, will whole heartedly chant the sutra and Daimoku. And because they are volunteering as friends, they do not charge a fee for the rituals.
Also done away is the Buddhist tradition of bestowing kaimyo posthumous Buddhist names. Instead secular names are used throughout the funeral service and on memorial tablets.
Why A Knowledgeable Funeral Undertaker is Important?
Search the Internet and you will notice that very little is written about the Soka funeral. There are a number of reasons for this, including:
- The Soka movement is relatively new. As late as 1991, it was still considered a lay movement in the Nichiren Shōshū branch of Buddhism
- The religion centers its teachings on helping members lead fulfilling lives. Death and its elaborate rituals are thus not the primary focus.
As such, having a funeral director familiar with Soka funeral arrangement is always helpful.
